3. Chargeable Weight Calculator

Carriers charge you based on whichever is higher: the actual weight of your cargo or the volumetric weight (how much space it takes up). This calculator works it out for you.

IMPORTANT: Chargeable Weight = whichever is HIGHER — Actual Weight or Volumetric Weight. This is an industry-wide rule for air, sea LCL, and courier shipments.

How to Use

  1. Select the freight mode: Air, Sea LCL, or Courier/Express.
  2. Enter the number of packages.
  3. Enter dimensions for one package: Length, Width, Height. Toggle between CM and Inches.
  4. Enter the actual gross weight of the entire shipment (KG or LB).
  5. Click Calculate.

Reading the Results

FieldWhat It Means
Total VolumeTotal CBM of all packages combined
Volumetric WeightWeight calculated from dimensions using the carrier’s formula
Actual WeightThe real weight you entered, converted to KG
Chargeable WeightThe higher of actual or volumetric — what the carrier bills on (highlighted)
Revenue Tons (W/M)For sea freight: MAX of weight in MT or volume in CBM
Example: Air freight — 10 cartons of clothing
Mode: Air  |  Packages: 10  |  Dimensions: 60 × 40 × 50 cm  |  Actual weight: 180 KG
Volumetric weight = (60 × 40 × 50 × 10) ÷ 6,000 = 200 KG
Actual weight = 180 KG
Chargeable weight = 200 KG (volumetric applies — cargo is light for its size)
Example: Sea LCL — heavy machinery parts
Mode: Sea LCL  |  Packages: 2  |  Dimensions: 120 × 100 × 80 cm  |  Actual weight: 2,400 KG
Volumetric weight = (120 × 100 × 80 × 2) ÷ 1,000 = 1,920 KG
Actual weight = 2,400 KG
Chargeable weight = 2,400 KG (actual weight applies — cargo is heavy)
Revenue Tons (W/M) = MAX(2.40 MT, 1.92 CBM) = 2.40 W/M

4. Rate Calculator

Calculate the total freight cost from a quoted rate. Handles different rate bases and converts between currencies.

How to Use

  1. Select the freight mode: FCL 20′, FCL 40′, FCL 40’HC, LCL, Air, or Breakbulk.
  2. Enter the rate and select the currency (e.g. 4.50 USD).
  3. Choose the rate basis: Per KG, Per CBM, Per W/M, Per Container, or Per MT.
  4. Enter the quantity (e.g. chargeable weight in KG, number of containers).
  5. Optionally select a different output currency.
  6. Click Calculate.
TIP: If you’ve already used the Chargeable Weight tab, the quantity may auto-populate — saving you from re-entering it.
Example: Air freight Shanghai to London
Rate: $4.50 USD per KG  |  Quantity: 200 KG  |  Output: GBP
Total: 200 × $4.50 = $900.00 USD
Converted: $900.00 × 0.79 = £711.00 GBP

Rate Basis Explained

BasisWhen to Use
Per KGAir freight, courier — enter chargeable weight as quantity
Per CBMLCL sea freight quoted per cubic metre
Per W/MLCL or breakbulk quoted per revenue ton
Per ContainerFCL — enter number of containers

5. Surcharges

In the Rate Calculator tab, below the base rate inputs, you’ll find an expandable “Add Surcharges” section. This lets you add common freight surcharges on top of the base rate to get a complete cost breakdown.

Using Presets

The fastest way to add surcharges is to load a preset. Select one from the “Load Preset” dropdown and the surcharge table auto-fills with typical rates for that trade lane:

PresetIncludes
Far East to UK — Ocean FCLBAF, LSS, THC (origin + dest), ISPS, BL Fee, ENS Filing

8. Demurrage & Detention

Estimate the charges you’ll incur for keeping cargo at the port (demurrage) or holding a container beyond the free period (detention).

What’s the Difference?

ChargeWhen It Applies
DemurrageCargo sitting at the port/terminal beyond free days — before you collect it
DetentionHolding the carrier’s container outside the port — after collection, before you return it empty

How to Use

  1. Select the calculation mode: Demurrage Only, Detention Only, or Combined.
  2. Enter the relevant dates (discharge, collection, return).
  3. Set the free days allowed.
  4. Choose flat rate or tiered rate and enter the daily charges.
  5. Enter the number of containers.
  6. Click Calculate.

Results show the total days, chargeable days, cost per container, and total charges. A timeline visualisation shows the free period versus the chargeable period.

TIP: Use the tiered rate option for more accurate estimates — most shipping lines charge higher daily rates as the delay increases (e.g. $50/day for days 1–5, $100/day for days 6–10, $150/day for day 11+).

Sea LCL(L cm × W cm × H cm) ÷ 1,000 per package
Courier(L cm × W cm × H cm) ÷ 5,000 per package

Chargeable Weight = whichever is HIGHER — actual weight or volumetric weight.

Revenue Tons (W/M) = MAX(Weight in Metric Tons, Volume in CBM). Used for LCL and breakbulk.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my chargeable weight higher than my actual weight?
Your cargo is “volumetric” — it takes up more space relative to its weight. This is common with clothing, foam, electronics packaging, and furniture. Carriers charge on volumetric weight because your cargo fills their aircraft or vessel with low-weight volume.
What is W/M and when is it used?
W/M stands for Weight or Measure (also called a Revenue Ton). It equals whichever is higher: 1 Metric Ton of weight or 1 Cubic Metre of volume. It’s the standard billing unit for LCL sea freight and breakbulk cargo.
What’s the difference between Short Ton, Long Ton, and Metric Ton?
Short Ton (ST) = 2,000 LB (907 KG) — used in the US. Long Ton (LT) = 2,240 LB (1,016 KG) — used in UK shipping and charter parties. Metric Ton (MT) = 1,000 KG — the international standard.
How current are the exchange rates?
Rates are sourced from central bank data and typically updated daily. The timestamp below the currency converter shows when they were last refreshed. Click “Refresh Rates” to fetch the latest. These are mid-market indicative rates — your bank may apply a different rate.
Why is there no volumetric weight option for FCL?
FCL (Full Container Load) is priced per container, not per weight or volume. You rent the entire container regardless of how full it is. Use the Rate Calculator with “Per Container” as the basis instead.
Can I enter dimensions in inches?
Yes. In the Chargeable Weight tab and Container Planner, there’s a unit toggle to switch between Centimetres and Inches. The calculator handles the conversion automatically.
What’s the difference between demurrage and detention?
Demurrage is charged when your container sits at the port beyond the free period — before you collect it. Detention is charged when you hold the carrier’s container outside the port beyond the free period — after collection, before returning it empty.
Are the surcharge preset rates accurate?
The preset rates are approximate industry averages for common trade lanes. Actual surcharges vary by carrier, season, and specific trade lane. Always confirm with your shipping line or freight forwarder. You can edit any rate after loading a preset.
Do I need an account to use the calculator?
No. All calculators are free to use without signing up. Calculations happen in your browser and no data is stored. The PDF download also works without an account.
